Who you are….It’s up to you

image

It’s good to dream
it’s good to want
without forgetting
who you are.

Life it moves
sometimes will choose
you’ll have no choice
lesson proves

We work for another
We work for a cause
We work for a matter
We work to be recognized

In the hustle and buzzle
and the business of life
we become different people
different places in time

we go into the future
without honoring the past
and in the chaos and conflict
serves unsteady grounds
to forget who we are

It’s good to look foward
with focused convinction
it’s good to recall
to learn from affliction
it’s good to live now
to create for the future

The past holds life’s lessons
identities in words
moments in folds
culture in norms

The future holds life’s destiny
Identities in words
moments in folds
culture in norms

But the present
it’s lived every day
in the smile on a child
in the hand, we give another
in a walk through a park
in the time with a friend
in the way we show love
in the way we wash our hair
in the happiness it brings
the air we choose to breath
when we dry another’s tear
or we push away a fear
in the way we make choices
in the way we speak our voices
in the gestures of our bodies
in the presence of our spirit

We create the future
with every step of today
if we only remember
it’s going to be okay

It’s good to look back
it’s good to look forward
it’s good to look sideways
it’s good to look up
it’s good to want more
it’s good to sit still

and always remember

It’s good to dream
it’s good to want
without forgetting
who we are

I AM BEAUTIFUL LIKE ME

opening

With your long blond hair
and your skin white as snow
your eyes blue, green, or bright
we bleed the same color
and we laugh in the same language
we cry in similar tears
and we care in comparable ways
I am not you
and you are not me
You are beautiful like you
and I am beautiful like me

With your straight dark hair
and your skin slightly dark and light
your eyes dark eyes slightly slanted
we bleed the same color
and we laugh in the same language
we cry in similar tears
and we care in comparable ways
I am not you
and you are not me
You are beautiful like you
and I am beautiful like me

With your hijab covered hair
and your mantras and dark skin involved
your eyes brown and black in color
we bleed the same color
and we laugh in the same language
we cry in similar tears
and we care in comparable ways
I am not you
and you are not me
You are beautiful like you
and I am beautiful like me

With your native hair in color
and your spiritual mother earth guardian
your eyes a history of ages
we bleed the same color
and we laugh in the same language
we cry in similar tears
and we care in comparable ways
I am not you
and you are not me
You are beautiful like you
and I am beautiful like me

With your dark afro and dreadlocks
and your black silky skin
your eyes of history kings and queens
we bleed the same color
and we laugh in the same language
we cry in similar tears
and we care in comparable ways
I am not you
and you are not me
You are beautiful like you
and I am beautiful like me

With my hair black as my mother and father
and my skin brown, the land that gave me birth
my eyes brown/black in reflection
of the roots given from my ancestors
we bleed the same color
and we laugh in the same language
we cry in similar tears
and we care in comparable ways
I am not you
and you are not me
You are beautiful like you
and I am beautiful like me

Hair may change color
from red, black, blond, brown, to gray
skin may vary in tone
from dark, light, in between it’s all the same
a language may be spoken
culture may be chosen
we bleed the same color
and we laugh inthe same language
we cry in simiar tears
and we cre in comparable ways
I am not you
and you are not me
You are beautiful like you
and I am beautiful like me

What if, today you simply chose to be beautiful
like you
because everyday
my brown skin, my black hair
as I look in the mirror
and she looks back at me
I say
I am
beautiful, just as I am
and you are beautiful, in the same form
just as you are

as you look in the mirror

Can you SEE?

Give Love

Untitled design (2)

What we give we receive
what we think we become
what we choose chooses us
what we learn will grow
what will fall will rise
what will rise will fall
what chooses us we can choose
what we become is what we think
what we receive is not always what we give

so live life anyway
smile more often
care to be kind
show love for another
say thank you

for life is but one
to live fully
love openly
forgive quickly
create differently

there is no need to regret
no room to fret
what would have, could have, should have
in the stand of a lonely road
are you really lonely when you are alone?

Did you find the person inside?
or did you buy to the entity of what was told
what was said should fill your soul

did you listen to the words that broke you
did you embrace a world full of thorns

NO, not me, I won’t
I refuse to be sworn
into the abyss of no tomorrows
into the consciousness of pain and sorrow
into the limits of time lost
into the insults and trials past
into the corrosion of minds and souls
into the illusion of darkness as light
into the shaming of bodies and minds

NO, not me, I won’t

What we give we receive
what we think we become
what we choose chooses us
what we learn will grow
what will fall will rise
what will rise will fall
what chooses us we can choose
what we become is what we think
what we receive is not always what we give

but you see life goes on
and if you take a step further
beyond given limits and scorn
you may find the light that is alive
already within your soul

life is to short
not to care, to love, to be kind, ignore lack of worth, not to heal, to live, be vibrant, be happy, love your family, care for your neighbor, text someone they matter, kiss your parents, hug your sons and daughters, create your future

and realize, you are enough

What we give we receive
what we think we become
what we choose chooses us
what we learn will grow
what will fall will rise
what will rise will fall
what chooses us we can choose
what we become is what we think
what we receive is not always what we give
what we….

The Beauty of Silence

happy valentine's day

In silence, we hear
the voice from within
that tells us to sing
to dance simply be

Sometimes in silence
if we allow our dark shade
it may say you can’t be
you can’t see, how dare you believe

How dare you be more
Don’t you know you are less
have you not concurred
that we shall care less

as I dug and dug deep
from all superficial
I found as a thinker
perhaps thoughts can blister

Beyond all the words
or the sorrows and scorns
As I silenced the mimes
I spoke to the rhymes

that said

You are worthy of self
you are worthy of you
silly girl don’t you see
it all starts from within

As I ran from the shadows
that crept through my skin
I found someone kinder
sleeping within

As she woke on that morning
and returned the next day
as she continuously courting
my confidence sway

from the person I was
to the woman I am
In the beauty of silence
I found her that day

When the few shadows scorn
insecurities slow wanderer
begins to creep into a waking hour
try rest on securities mind

I simply remember
in the moments of silence
the girl that woke
the woman that became
the person that I am
the one who I am yet to be

the love that I am

the love that I give

In the Beauty of Silence

Is the essence within
